Using the proper screwdriver

Post by n7ptm »

Yes, there is a difference in screws/screwdrivers, especially when it comes to radios. Ever wonder why you're stripping screw heads on your radios? It's probably because you're using Phillips screwdrivers in a screw designed for JIS screwdrivers. See attachment.

I had no idea the Japanese had developed a different "Phillips" head screw. Thanks for the heads-up, Bob!

They did it ~20 years before the Phillips screw came out. Phillips was developed, in part, for automotive assembly line use. The fact that they intentionally cam-out of the head is mostly why.

The thing I like about JIS screws is if you put one on the tip of a JIS driver and hold the driver horizontal, the screw stays there! No magnets, nothing. It just doesn't fall off.
