Re: Obtaining a printed copy of your FCC license

The problem with getting the copy from the FCC's site is it has the words "Official Copy" diagonally across the entire 5x7 document, in a very visible watermark. Interestingly, the wallet-size copy does not have that watermark anywhere, just the opposite of what it should be.

Re: Using the proper screwdriver

They did it ~20 years before the Phillips screw came out. Phillips was developed, in part, for automotive assembly line use. The fact that they intentionally cam-out of the head is mostly why. The thing I like about JIS screws is if you put one on the tip of a JIS driver and hold the driver horizont...

Using the proper screwdriver

Yes, there is a difference in screws/screwdrivers, especially when it comes to radios. Ever wonder why you're stripping screw heads on your radios? It's probably because you're using Phillips screwdrivers in a screw designed for JIS screwdrivers. See attachment.

Re: Winlink Password login coming.

Bill's right; you have to go to the web site first to get it to work. I apparently already had a username & password there, so I tried to set it up in RMS Express first. Well, that didn't work. So I went to the web site, logged in with that username & password I had, and made the changes. Th...

Re: NMO mount install question.

I have this Larsen dual-band antenna on both the van and the house: http://www.hamradio.com/detail.cfm?pid=H0-000565 It works great, but the mount on the van is so-so. Having a full-size van, the fact that can fit in my garage is more important than good comm, so a not-so-good antenna location on th...

Bill

Thanks, I had forgotten about 144.97. I saw k7mt-10 in my connect list in Packet WL2K but thought that was your old BBS. I connected to it tonight, no problems.

How do those of us in HLN get on Winlink now that your node is gone? Can I connect to BELMT then GTF in RMS Express? I tried that but it didn't work.

Re: Automatic power switch

The thing is, my 8100 has an auto power off timer (lowest is 1 hour) so dead batteries have been rare. However, it would also time out on me if I was driving for an hour or more and didn't use the radio. The 8100 also had no way to deal with the voltage dip. <whine> And, I had to turn it on manually...

Automatic power switch

I just bought an automatic power switch for my 2/70 mobile unit in the van. It is probably the most useful thing a mobile ham could have. No more dead batteries due to a radio left on. http://www.aprsworld.com/apo3/ Basically this thing is a voltage-controlled switch with a timer and a relay after i...

Re: Forum Styles Etc.

I like the new layout, now I don't have to make the browser window full-screen in order to see the messages without having to scroll side-to-side. With a non-full-screen window, the image at the top is partially hidden off of the right edge, but who cares about that. At least the text part of the pa...
