Forum Styles Etc.

Post by N7YO »

Hi Everyone, I am sure most of you have noticed a few changes on Montana's Ham Radio forum. First of all the "Portal" that provided the side columns with added content are gone. The reason for the removal of this feature was largely due to lack of support. That software had not been updated since 2009 and had become the target of hackers. I felt it best to remove this for safety concerns.

I have been asked what "happened to the different styles?" well the short answer is one of managing the forum. Each style must be configured to work properly with the forum. For instance the banner at the top of the page must be written into the code and take quite a bit of work to make it show properly. So i have limited it to a choice of 3 styles.

There are other plugins for the Forum that may be implemented in the future that my replace some of the features that were lost with the demise of the Portal. But no promises, most of the plugins only work with the default styles. So in other words, we may have to limit styles further to gain functionality, I'm not really sure if we want to do that! But we'll look into it.

Your input here would be great, so please lets have a discussion on this. And see what we can come up with. ;)

I like the new layout, now I don't have to make the browser window full-screen in order to see the messages without having to scroll side-to-side. With a non-full-screen window, the image at the top is partially hidden off of the right edge, but who cares about that. At least the text part of the page resizes to fit the browser window now.

I'm running Windows 7, IE10, monitor rez is 1680 x 1050.

PS - I got a new car in March. "New" is relative; it's a 2003 VW Golf diesel. First car I've owned in 16 years. Drove company vans on personal time during that time, but got tired of that. (17 mpg vs 38 - is there any comparison?)

Update! As you can tell the format of the Forum has changed again. I have found a portal that provides the same information as was available before.

For those of you who don't like the addition of the portal or don't like the arrangement, you can rearrange the blocks or hide the one or both sides. Notice the arrows just above the top block on either side? Click on them and the blocks will disappear or reappear as desired.
for other control of the portal blocks, locate the link at the top just under the banner and that says "Arrange Blocks" and click on it, you can then arrange the blocks to your liking. If you have difficulty just let me know and we can discover the options together. You may also notice that there is only one operational style at this time. This is because the portal only renders properly on the default style. I will possibly add styles to the forum, but only after the have been shown to work properly. Thanks for your understanding.
